No (spring) break for hot fishing action on snook, redfish and trout
Springtime fishing around Anna Maria Island is in full swing.
Both back country and migratory species are being caught with regularity. On the flats, snook and redfish are devouring baits such as shiners and pinfish. Throughout southern Tampa Bay, migratory fish such as Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, ladyfish and pompano can be found in the usual areas — artificial reefs, local fishing piers and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Mangrove snapper and sheepshead are being caught around structure in Tampa Bay and in the Gulf of Mexico.
The transition of bait is finally occurring. Live shrimp are still producing bite, but most fishers are switching to live shiners. Most species we target are readily feeding on live shiners as their primary food source, especially snook, redfish and spotted seatrout. That being said, its time to start checking your favorite baits spots for netting shiners. If you don’t throw a cast net, you can always rely on M&M Bait Company to supply your shiners. These guys work hard so you don’t have to.
Lastly, if you haven’t noticed, boat traffic in our region is at an all time high. Be cautious and courteous when on the water. When in doubt, slow down.
